Top Ten Period Drama Costumes

It's been way too long since I've done a blog post (note to self: don't start a blog the week before you move house!) and, because of moving, I still don't have time to do a terribly long or thought-out post. So, I've done a round-up of my ten favourite costumes from period dramas. It's in ascending order, starting with my least favourite. There are some dresses that I love but couldn't find any pictures of so had to miss out, but anyway, here we go!

                                          10. Lizzie Bennet, Pride and Prejudice (2005)

I'm not a massive fan of the 2005 Pride and Prejudice, but I really like this dress! I don't know why particularly... it's just so simple and elegant I guess.

9. Emma, Emma (2009)

I love the colour of the coat! The hat is also a very nice shape - a bit different to the normal bonnet. I don't like the dress with the jacket so much though, as I feel like there's too much fabric in the skirt of the dress for the silhouette to be properly balanced (I'm aware that that's quite nitpicking!)

8. Emma, Emma (1996)

The pink dress that Emma wears in the archery scene is so lovely; the colour also suits Gwyneth Paltrow very well! The only reason why it's not further down the list is because I'm not such a fan of the capey thing at the back.

7. Marianne Dashwood, Sense and Sensibility (1995)

This is such a nice outfit - I especially like the spotty overlay on the dress.

6. Jane Fairfax, Emma (1996)

This is so pretty! The bonnet is a lovely shape, the dress is a gorgeous colour, and I love the stripes!

5. Lizzie Bennet, Pride and Prejudice (1995)

This whole outfit looks so effortlessly elegant! The bonnet and coat match so perfectly - I really like those short coats that they wore in Regency times. (I think they are called spencers?)

4. Maria, The Sound of Music

The fluttery sleeves and broad waistband of this dress are so pretty; this dress looks so beautiful yet wearable, unlike some of the ones on the list. Somehow, it's hard to imagine yourself pulling on the next dress. for example!

3. Cinderella, Cinderella (2015)

Cinderella is definitely a period drama... isn't it? It's set in a particular historical period... I think? Anyway, this dress is amazing! I almost put it as no. 2, but then changed my mind at the last minute. The top three were all pretty close, to be honest.

2. Maria, The Sound of Music

Another dress from The Sound of Music! I don't know why I love this dress quite as much as I do, but when I was arranging the pictures in order I found that this one came in second place. I think maybe it's the combination of gorgeous floral print and contrasting bodice? That fabric is so pretty...

                                                             1. Amy, Little Women (2019)

This dress is sooo stunning!! I love it. The pattern of the fabric is lovely, and the fit is beautiful. I think it gets just the right level of crinoline - it sticks out but doesn't go overboard. And the hat is the perfect finishing touch to my favourite outfit on the list. I love all of Amy's dresses from this adaption of Little Women, actually. I could have filled the whole list with ten of her outfits, but thought it would be more interesting not to!

I'd love to hear your thoughts! Which is your favourite outfit on the list? Which period drama costumes do you like best?

(P.S. If anyone else wanted to do a post of their top ten period drama costumes, that would be really fun! Especially you, Cecilia!)

  2. I just rewatched Pride & Prejudice '95 and I forgot how beautiful Lizzie's clothes were, especially her spencer jackets. And both of those dresses of Maria's have always been favorites of mine.

    1. Yes, I love all the clothes from that series! And the costumes from The Sound of Music are also lovely; the dress that Liesl wears at the party is another one I really like.

  3. What lovely choices! I especially like Maria's blue dress in The Sound of Music, and Amy's dress in Little Women. I admit that it would be difficult for me to compile such a list - somehow I often don't remember costumes in movies, even the loveliest ones! (That doesn't mean I won't try my hand at it sometime in any case, though ;P)

    1. Thank you! Yes, I found it harder than I thought to make the list. I had one or two that I knew I wanted, then after that I was just googling different period dramas to try and remember dresses! If you ever did want to try it, that would be really fun!
